Many coffee reviewers recommend Baratza for their high-quality product and responsible business practices.

Not only are their designs durable and effective, but they do their best to keep waste from landfills (they’ll sell parts for repair, even for obsolete models, so you can fix up your old grinder instead of shelling out for a new one).

Finding the Best Coffee Grinder for You

Grinding a coffee

You might be wondering why your choice of coffee grinder even matters.

The size of the grind affects extraction, which has to do with the flavor of your coffee.

If the grind size is wrong, it messes with the extraction and thus the coffee’s flavor – over-extraction makes coffee bitter, and under-extraction makes coffee sour (the smaller the grind, the more extraction).

The ideal grind size is different for each type of coffee. Uniformity, on the other hand, is a quality you want for any type of bean – the grinds should all be about the same size so there aren’t different rates of extraction.

Coffee grinders come in two styles, burr and blade. There are also flat burrs and conical burrs. Burr grinders cost more, but they have the ability to grind your coffee to the same size consistently so they’re preferred. All 9 of Baratza’s grinders are burr-style.

Watch out for products with false burrs, as they’ll crank out grinds of more inconsistent sizes like blade-style grinders (they’ll have chunky teeth instead of sharp opposing surfaces). If you find an electric grinder under $100, it’ll probably have false burrs. Go for machines with conical steel burrs if you want to stay closer to the budget.

You can also go with a hand grinder if you really want to save money. Hand grinders are consistent and last longer, especially those with ceramic burrs. Hario is a great hand grinder brand, and most of their models cost between $30 and $60. Your coffee grounds will have a more personal touch with a hand grinder anyway.

A favorite among coffee grinders, the Encore is known as the go-to entry-level burr grinder for home coffee brewers.

It has 40 different grind settings ranging from 250 to 1200 microns for fine (best for espresso) or coarse (best for French press) grinds. It also has a pulse button on the front to grind into your brew basket at will. The Encore’s great for manual brew methods or for just exploring brew methods in general.

The DC motor turns slowly (450 RPM) for a smooth bean feed and cool, quiet operation during long grinding cycles. It has a thermal cutoff switch that’ll automatically reset when needed.

Cleaning’s easy – you don’t need tools to remove the burrs, and the machine minimizes excess grinds left in the grinder.

Accessories include the Esatto, which allows your Encore to grind by weight. You just have to set the weight and the Esatto will weigh your ground coffee while grinding and auto-stop when done. You can also get a hopper extender for an extra 9 oz. of space on top of your 8 oz. hopper (you can even add on more than one extender if you need to).

The Encore does an excellent job of producing fresh and consistent coffee grounds. Baratza’s coffee grinders only get more expensive from here, but they also get more technical and specific when it comes to flavor extraction.

The Virtuoso Baratza coffee grinder is the next step up from the Encore. It is more precise, and grinds faster than the Encore. Its throughput rate is 2 grams per second – double the Encore’s.

With 40 different grind settings to choose from (boasting a range from 250 to 1200 microns), the Virtuoso is a great all-around grinder from fine to coarse and espresso to manual brew.

The Virtuoso has a pulse button like the Encore, but it also has a 60-second timer switch on the side so you can roughly dose your coffee grind time, powering off at the end of the cycle.

No need to worry about excess heat or loud grinding – the 450 RPM DC motor gives your beans a smooth, uniform grind and has a thermal cutoff switch that’ll automatically reset when needed.

Accessories include the Esatto, which allows your Virtuoso to grind by weight. You just have to set the weight, and the Esatto will weigh your ground coffee while grinding and auto-stop when done.

You can also get a hopper extender for an extra 9 oz. of space on top of your 8 oz. hopper (you can even add on more than one extender if you need to). Then there’s the Portaholder, which replaces the grounds bin for the espresso portafilter for hands-free grinding. It also cleans up easy.

The i in Sette 270Wi stands for intelligent. Over time, this Baratza coffee grinder’s accuracy improves by learning from its dose errors and modifying the amount of coffee grinds it expels for the next time. If your Sette 270Wneeds any software updates or changes, it’ll get them via Bluetooth connectivity between the grinder’s Acacia tech and its updater app.

The Vario-W is the same as the Vario except that it dispenses coffee grounds based on weight instead of time. It has a built-in precision load cell so there’s no need to pre-weigh your coffee beans before grinding them up for your manual brew.

Because of the weighing system, the Vario-W can’t hold a portafilter, so it just comes with a grounds bin. Its hopper also has a shutoff gate to easily move a full hopper with no mess.

There are optional steel burrs you can get if you dedicate your life to pour-over coffee – they give extra flavor to your medium and coarse grinds. The steel burrs won’t work for espresso, though – they won’t grind fine enough.

The Forte AP is more intended for commercial use in coffee shops, so this Baratza coffee grinder would work best for you if you intend to open up a small business (it’s basically the Vario-W boosted to work for commercial use).

The AP in Forte AP stands for all-purpose, which is suitable as the coffee grinder makes great grinds for all brew methods – be they espresso or manual brew.

There are 10 repeatable macro adjustments from fine to coarse that each split into 26 micro settings for exceptional grind size fine-tuning.

It can grind either by time or by weight. You can select if you want to grind by time or weight on the LED touchscreen – that’s also where you can operate the three programmable dose presets. It can even convert a weighted dosage into a timed value. (Note: if you have The Forte AP set to weight-dose, you can’t use a permafilter, you’ll need the grounds bin).

You can get a hopper extender if you need an extra 8 oz. on top of the included 9 oz. bean hopper. It also has ceramic flat burrs which stay sharp for twice as long as the steel burrs of most other grinders.

You can get the Forte BG for your café or small business. It’s made for commercial use and is essentially an amped-up version of the Vario-W.

The Forte BG is incredibly similar to the Forte AP, but the BG is specialized for pour-over coffee brew methods that need a flavorful medium or coarse grind. For this reason, the Forte BG has steel burrs instead of the AP’s ceramic.

All other features are shared with the Forte AP.
